The Johnson Presidency was marked, almost from its inception, by the tragedy of Vietnam, the first war which the United States found it could not win. Yet this Presidency also saw a massive domestic reform programme. Johnson developed Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, greatly expanding the role of the federal government. The Presidents who succeeded Johnson have sought to limit the scope of the federal government, not to expand it. Did the Johnson Presidency, then, mark the end of an era? |
