Holocaust Research for Year 9

The following links and resources are here to help you do some high quality research on the Holocaust.
Remember, the Holocaust is about more than just facts and figures, these are the stories of real people's lives and traumas. It is important that you think about the stories of indivuduals when you research. It is very important that we respect people's lives and experiences and take this into account when we research. Remember - you are playing an important role, not only in illustrating the lessons of the Holocaust, but in keeping the spirit of the people who were affected alive. There is more on why careful teaching of the Holocaust is necessary HERE
Some key things to consider:
* One of the best sites for personal stories: Holocaust Learning is a Leeds based charity and tells the stories of local Holocaust survivors HERE
* USHMM gives some excellent information on the background to the Holocaust on their website HERE
* A good overview but quite general from a school site. Victims are covered HERE, Perpetrators HERE, Bystanders HERE, Resistors HERE
* A simple, but general, introduction to the Holocaust from the BBC HERE and HERE
* A really fantastic site with lots opf links to real stories: The Holocaust Explained can be found HERE
* An excellent introductory film: The Path to Nazi Genocide is to be found HERE
* A range of 37 individual stories of people caught up in the Holocaust HERE
* A fantastic, but very detailed booklet on resistance during the Holocaust HERE

Some key things to consider:
- Think carefully about what images you want to use. It can be tempting to use horrific imagery in an attempt to shock and motivate
students. However, much of the photographic evidence of the Holocaust was produced by the perpetrators. Shock doesn't create a worthwhile learning experience, nor does it help people explore the important issues that surround the Holocaust. - Try to be true to the experiences people have shared. Holocaust education can be statistical and impersonal. Individual stories get
lost in a mass of numbers. Try to use real stories and testamony rather than relying on general material. - Think about the lives people led before or after the Holocaust - they should not be defined by this alone.
